L.A. estate combines Nantucket charm with Hollywood hip

This is the second story of an occasional series looking at stunning homes throughout the United States.

The hilltop house, with its panoramic views of the downtown Los Angeles skyline and Catalina Island, is far from the Spanish-style designs typically seen in the area.

With its “Nantucket-style” dark clapboard architecture, the estate at 1740 Westridge Rd. in a gated community in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles is a blend of East Coast and West Coast designs.

The 5,267-square-foot property — listed for $4.995 million — has a Hollywood pedigree. Its current owners are Stephen Gaghanwho won an Oscar for the “Traffic” screenplay and wrote and directed “Syriana,” and his wife, fashion designer Minnie Mortimer.

It was previously owned by actress Nev Campbell, who in the 1990s starred in the horror movie “Scream” and the TV series “Party of Five.”

Gaghan and Mortimer, who have lived in the house six years, “just enjoyed it,” said Richard Stearns, real estate broker and founding partner of Partners Trust, which is listing the property.

“They put in a zip line” where the mountain descends into a ravine, Stearns said. “Certainly, the view is one of the keys,” he added. ” It’s a spectacular, gated property, very private. It’s got beautiful outdoor spaces, porches and verandas. It’s a very intimate and charming house.”

The house has five bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms and four fireplaces. The dining room has been converted into a library. The kitchen has marble finishes and high-end stainless-steel appliances, including Wolf, Biele, Sub-Zero and Viking.

In the back of the house, which sits on a one-acre lot, is a resort-style pool.
