Flip Saunders talks about upcoming Wizards season

Wizards Coach Flip Saunders discussed the upcoming NBA season with reporters today. Beat writer Michael Lee tweeted about the news conference and talked to players working out at Verizon Center afterward.

1:22 p.m.: [Brendan] Haywood: Mavs didn’t get sized for rings or see design. “We don’t know if Mark Cuban is on going to be on there like this,” he said, waving

1:06 p.m.: Blast from the past in the gym. Former Atlanta Hawk DerMarr Johnson, still skinny as ever, is here. For some reason, he’s guarding Blatche.

1:06 p.m.: Said he can’t wait to coach him because he really improved this summer RT @PascalGibBN: What did Flip say about Kevin being stuck in Spain?

1:02 p.m.: Flip: “I want to compete for the playoffs.” Said team needs to stay healthy & finish close games.

1 p.m.: Flip said Nick Young & JaVale McGee need to mature on & off the court. “”The cinnamon thing, that doesn’t cut it.”

12:56 p.m.: Flip wants Rashard Lewis to get back to the diversified player he was in Seattle & not be one-dimensional as he was in Orlando.

12:54 p.m.: Flip on Jordan Crawford: “I didn’t know he was as good as Michael Jordan...but I knew he had a lot of confidence.”

12:49 p.m.: Flip wants Javale McGee to be more substance than highlights. “We’re going to eliminate his full-court dribbling” or he’ll sit with Mike Lee

12:46 p.m.: Flip on condensed training camp/schedule. “I like the way it’s set up. I think it’s going to be more conducive to a younger team.”

12:44 p.m.: Flip on bringing back Nick Young. “Anytime you have assets, you always want to retain your assets.”

12:41 p.m.: Flip said the #wizards had a better success when Andray Blatche was on the floor last season.

12:40 p.m.: Flip on Wall’s rookie year: “John, coming in, realized it was harder than he thought. That helped him get prepared for this summer.”

12:39 p.m.: Flip on having a lot of small forwards. “The guys that we have can guard multiple positions. We don’t have a lot of duplicate players.”

12:37 p.m.: Flip said he’s hoping to have a continuation of how the #wizards ended the regular season. Wants team to cut down on turnovers, improve on D

12:35 p.m.: Flip said veteran teams and young teams can all claim to have an advantage with a condensed season. No one knows until they start playing.
