Wizards center JaVale McGee will join Derrick Rose, Al Horford, Tyreke Evans, D.J. Augustin, Brook Lopez, Robin Lopez and Mike Miller at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam on Tuesday for the first of two games as part of the “Hoops for Troops” USO Tour of Hawaii. The players will team with service men and woman on Thursday at Schofield Barracks.
McGee arrived in Honolulu on Sunday after spending the past week in the Philippines and will visit military units in the area throughout the week. They will visit wounded soldiers, lead two youth clinics and share meals with the troops. After making the rounds Monday, McGee wrote on Twitter, “So much respect for the troops! They have so much heart!!!”
While fulfilling a promotional tour for Smart Communications in the Philippines, McGee started to do the Flying Buddha, danced with people at the Manila Airport and told InterAKTV that he would be open to playing in the country.
“It’s a great idea, but I don’t know for sure,” he said. “If I play for another country, the Philippines would definitely be a consideration.”
Andray Blatche also worked with the USO to assist soldiers last month by hosting a reception for injury veterans and their families aboard the USS Sequoia. Blatche also donated $10,000 to Operation Enduring Care for the Wounded Warrior and Family Center under construction at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.
