Wizards hope Satoransky will play in Las Vegas Summer League

The Washington Wizards are hopeful that second-round pick Tomas Satoransky will join them in July at the Las Vegas Summer League.

Satoransky, a native of the Czech Republic, was drafted by the Wizards on Thursday with the second pick of the second round.

Team president Ernie Grunfeld said Satoransky remains under contract in Spain, but has an undisclosed buyout to play in the NBA. He does not need to use that buyout to participate in the summer league. Grunfeld and head Coach Randy Wittman both said on Friday afternoon they hoped he would join the team.

As long as Satoransky remains in Europe, the team will retain his rights. Grunfeld said it would be good for the Wizards to preserve a roster spot, while also saving minutes for the other young players.

“He can stay there and he’s playing in the best league in Europe,” said Grunfeld. “We’re hoping he can develop with the proper coaching he’s getting over there and the proper minutes.”

Satoranksy, a 20-year-old guard, averaged 4.8 points and 1.4 assists last season while playing professionally in Spain for Cajasol Sevilla. He averaged 16.1 points and 7.2 rebounds at the 2008 European Division B Under-18 Championships.
