Jamelle Hagins is not a Washington native, but the 6-foot-9 power forward has an affinity for the Washington Wizards in part because he has family in the nation’s capital and played college basketball a few hours away at the University of Delaware.

Tuesday morning, Hagins was among six prospects to work out for the Wizards at Verizon Center as the team moved into the second day of predraft evaluations. The others were guards Ramon Galloway (La Salle), Tray Woodall (Pitt) and Malcolm Armstead (Wichita State), forward Romero Osby (Oklahoma) and guard-forward Demitrius Conger (St. Bonaventure).

Washington owns the No. 3 overall pick and two additional selections in the second round of the June 27 NBA draft.

This week, the Wizards’ front office and coaching staff are auditioning players who by all accounts will be available in the second round or who may try to catch on in the NBA as undrafted free agents.

Hagins, according to multiple mock draft Web sites, falls into the latter category, but he’s trying to sway general managers following a senior season in which he became the first in Delaware history to be named CAA defensive player of the year. Hagins led the conference and ranked 33rd in the country in blocks per game (2.4) and was eighth nationally in rebounding (10.5).

“I know a lot about the D.C. area,” Hagins said. “I know a little bit about the team. I know they have John Wall, of course. I think I can help the team by just bringing my energy, rebounding the ball, playing defense, things like that.”

Osby also was a determined rebounder in college, averaging seven per game as a senior and 7.3 during his junior year. The 6-8 power forward transferred to Oklahoma following two seasons at Mississippi State, where he started three times in 71 games.

In two seasons with the Sooners, Osby started 62 of 63 games. He averaged 16 points per game this season and became the first Oklahoma player in four years to be named first-team all-Big 12.

“They want guys that can run with John and can run with Bradley [Beal] because they’re really trying to get up and down the floor and implement that type of system,” Osby said. “They just told me to make sure I’m in great shape and run the floor. They like that I can do some inside and outside things. No promises, but definitely some interest.”
