John Wall left off Team USA roster; Bradley Beal gets an invite

Wizards point guard John Wall will not be among the 28 NBA players trying out this summer for Team USA to compete for the FIBA World Cup in Spain, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Bradley Beal, his backcourt mate, said he did receive an invitation and will be heading to training camp for the U.S. men’s national team this summer.

“It’s a blessing and an honor to be there, at such a young age, being a part of that team is being a part of history,” the 20-year-old Beal said on Wednesday after the Wizards lost, 113-111, to the Boston Celtics. “I still have a lot of work to do. I’m fortunate to be invited to camp and hopefully, I’ll be able to make the team.”

Wall, who is having the best season of his career, was among the players chosen to participate in Team USA minicamp last July in Las Vegas and spent a week training with several rising talents such as Paul George, Kyrie Irving and DeMarcus Cousins in what served as an audition for the national team.

Beal also attended, but mostly as a spectator. He was unable to fully participate as he recovered from a stress injury in his right fibula. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo and Coach Mike Krzyzewski both wanted Beal around to observe even though he was limited.

The FIBA World Cup will take place in Spain in September. All-star forwards Kevin Durant and Kevin Love, members of the gold medal-winning Olympic team in 2012 and FIBA world championship team 2010, both committed to play for the team last summer.

The official roster is expected to be announced on Thursday. Wall fell victim to a glut at point guard, despite believing that he played well enough last summer and this season to warrant an invitation.

In his fourth season, Wall is averaging career highs of 20 points and 8.5 assists for the Wizards and could very well earn his first-ever NBA all-star appearance when NBA coaches vote for reserves on Jan. 30.

Beal is averaging 17 points and 3.7 rebounds in 32 games for the Wizards (20-21).

ESPN.com obtained a copy of the complete 28-man list, which will eventually be whittled down to the 12-man roster for the World Cup. The list includes point guards Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard.

Beal always had the better shot of earning an invitation, given the dearth of talent at shooting guard. Kobe Bryant is done representing the United States in international competitions. James Harden, Klay Thompson and Kyle Korver were the only guards to receive the invitation, according to other reports.

The rest of the roster will be filled by LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler, LaMarcus Aldridge, Anthony Davis, Andre Iguodala, Blake Griffin, David Lee, Kawhi Leonard, Kenneth Faried, Andre Drummond, George and Cousins.
