Wizards force a Game 6 with dominating win

Marcin Gortat had 31 points and 16 rebounds, John Wall scored 27 points and the Wizards shot 50 percent from the field as a team in a 102-79 win in Indianapolis.

Now it’s back to Verizon Center for Game 6 on Thursday.

“We owe those fans, they’re amazing,” Wall told TNT’s Tracy Wolfson after the game.

Numbers don’t lie

The Wizards are out-rebounding the Pacers 60-21, have assisted on 21 of their 40 buckets, are shooting 50.6 percent from the field and boast four double-digit scorers. Oh and they’re up by 30

Hey look, it’s Otto Porter

With the Wizards leading 95-66 and 3:53 to play, Otto Porter checked in and drained a long two-pointer one minute later. Who’s ready for Game 6?

Can they make it nine?

Looks like Game 5 is in the bag, pushing the Wizards one step closer to being just the ninth team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit. Can they do it?

Is this real?

Still too early to look ahead to Game 6? Nah. This one is OVER. I think. They’re still the Wizards.

Chris Webber suggested that it would be better for the Wizards if Game 6 was relocated to Bankers Life Fieldhouse and I’m thinking he has a point.

Not much in reserve

Al Harrington’s free throw just marked the first bench points for the Wizards. But the starters came to play and judging by the score, it’s better that way for Washington

Polish Hammer don’t hurt ‘em

Gortat is sizzling with 30 points on 13-for-15 shooting. It’s like Roy Hibbert’s not even there….again.

John Wall is Artis Gilmore?

John Wall is shooting the lights out (27 points on 11-of-20 shooting through three quarters) so it’s fitting that Chris Webber compared him to a player who led the league in field goal percentage six times. OK, so Webber was comparing Wall’s sideburns to Artis Gilmore’s. Close enough. Here’s Gilmore, by the way. You be the judge.

Wall and Gortat on high

Both John Wall and Marcin Gortat have set new playoff career highs tonight with 27 points (and counting) and 16 rebounds (and counting), respectively. And we’ve still got one quarter to play

Beautiful ball movement on that last play before it ended up in the hands of John Wall, who is brimming with confidence right now

‘The pace has to stay here’

Randy Wittman addressing his team during a timeout: “The pace, the pace has to stay here. It has to stay here. Has to stay here. You can’t fall back in any slowdown. No slowdown from here on out. I love where we’re at with our pace.” Wizards hoping the lead stays here — or grows — too. Getting that thing over 20 points would be nice.

Dan Steinberg shared with the world today about Gortat’s propensity to shave his armpits because it’s more “hygienic.” Welp, he’s clean shaven and ballin’ so hard.

It must be at the armpits

Dan Steinberg shared with the world this week about Gortat’s propensity to shave his armpits because it’s more “hygienic.” Welp, he’s clean shaven and ballin’ so hard.

Are the Pacers even trying?

Roy Hibbert is 7-2. David West is a 6-9 bruiser. Paul George is averaging nearly double-digit rebounds. Yet the Wizards are absolutely KILLING the Pacers on the boards.

BBQ Pierogi Alert

I told you the TNT halftime show wouldn’t disappoint. While narrating Marcin Gortat’s first-half highlights — and there were a lot of them — Shaquille O’Neal kept yelling Barbecue Pierogi Alert. “That’s sausage for you dummies,” O’Neal said. Except pierogies aren’t sausages. Not even close. In any event, Gortat has 21 points and 13 rebounds midway through the third. BBQ Pierogi Alert!

Simple formula for Wizards

Rebound the ball, push the ball, give the ball to Gortat. If he misses, get offensive rebound, shoot the ball again.

What shooting slump?

John Wall is starting to feel it and shoot with confidence. He’s 8-for-15 now with 17 points. Wizards up 56-43 in the third.

Round Mound of Rebound

No, not Charles Barkley. Marcin Gortat has 13 rebounds. The Wizards have 13 offensive rebounds. The Pacers have 13 total boards.

The Wizards have held the advantage on the glass this series due to Indiana abandoning the boards in hopes of getting back on defense quicker, but the margin has never been THIS wide (39-13).

Gortat is pulling a Hibbert

Sounds crazy to compare the two, but after being benched in Game 4 and scoring just two points, Gortat is playing like a man possessed with 19 points and 13 rebounds through 27 minutes. Sound familiar?

Run-and-shoot Wizards

Pretty impressive that the Wizards are shooting 47 percent from the field despite missing nine of their 10 three-point field goal attempts.

Good finish to the first half but…

…if this series has taught us nothing else, it’s that the Wizards can win and lose games in the third quarter. We’ll see how they come out from halftime.

10-0 run for the Pacers

You figure with all of Washington’s turnovers it was just a matter of time before the Pacers turned them into points.

Too many turnovers

Pacers have scored 12 points off eight Wizards turnovers and there are still almost 10 minutes to play in the first half. Washington had 13 turnovers in Sunday’s loss. Wizards can’t continue to beat themselves in a tough environment.

Wizards off to yet another fast start

The Wizards hadn’t trailed at the end of the first quarter this postseason until Game 4 and they followed that up by outscoring the Pacers 29-11 in the second quarter to take a 17-point halftime lead. Washington is off to yet another fast start tonight, but will it matter?

That’s a good way to break out of a slump

RGIII tweets support for Wizards

Robert Griffin III, who attended Game 4 at the Verizon Center, still has that Wizards fever.

What will Charles Barkley say tonight?

One of the highlights of watching the NBA playoffs, for me at least, is the TNT studio crew, including Charles Barkley. After guaranteeing that the Wizards would make the Eastern Conference finals after Washington won Game 1 at Indiana, Sir Charles has apparently jumped off the bandwagon. He’s looking for the Pacers to show their killer instinct tonight to prove that they’re a serious threat to Miami (or Brooklyn) in the next round. Halftime should be fun.

Speaking of Gortat…

The Polish Hammer — he of six total points since going for 21 points in Game 2 — told reporters at this morning’s shoot around that Tuesday’s elimination game “comes down to what you’re made of.”

More than you wanted to know about Marcin Gortat’s personal hygiene

Keep an eye out the next time Marcin Gortat delivers a poster dunk or calls for the ball down low. The Wizards center recently told Dan that he sometimes shaves his armpits with electric clippers. Does it make him more aerodynamic? “No, Gortat said. “It’s more clean. Keep it clean more. It’s just more hygienic. It’s just clean.” Now you know.

John Wall is struggling through his playoff debut

In his first postseason appearance, the Wizards guard has lost the shooting touch and fire that made him a first-time All-Star during the regular season. Is this part of the process that all great players must go through to succeed or cause for concern?

Odds are stacked against the Wizards

You’re sure to hear this nugget repeated during tonight’s broadcast, but only eight teams have come back from a three-games-to-one deficit to win a series in NBA history. One of those teams was the 1978-79 Bullets, which went on to lose in the NBA finals. Only two teams have accomplished the feat by winning two of three games on the road. Can the Wizards be the third?
