Wizards waive Melvin Ely

The Wizards have waived center Melvin Ely, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The move comes two weeks after the team acquired the veteran from the Pelicans and a trade exception from the Rockets as part of a three-team sign-and-trade that sent Trevor Ariza to Houston.

The decision was expected. Ely has been out the NBA for much of the last five seasons and his contract was going to be guaranteed if he was on the roster on Friday (Aug. 1). Ely, 36, spent most of the 2013-14 season in the NBA Developmental League before signing with New Orleans in April to finish the campaign. He  played in two games.

A nine-year veteran, Ely was the Clippers’ first-round pick, 12th overall, in 2002. He has career averages of 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds.
