In a sign of the Wizards’ rising profile, the NBA has scheduled the team to play at noon on Christmas Day against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. It will be the first time the Wizards have played on Christmas since 2008, when they fell to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The NBA has made Christmas its marquee regular season day in recent years, featuring its best and most popular teams in nationally televised broadcasts, and expanding the holiday slate to five games.
The entire 2014-15 NBA regular season schedule will be released Wednesday evening.
Washington finished 44-38 last season and advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2005. The Knicks, playing in the country’s largest media market, struggled to a 37-45 mark and failed to qualify for the postseason. They have played on Christmas day in each of the last five seasons.
