Americans are ideologically closest to ... Jon Huntsman?

A new USA Today/Gallup survey asked Americans to rate themselves and the 2012 presidential candidates in terms of ideology, with 1 being very liberal and 5 very conservative. The public’s average score is 3.3 — the same slightly right of center rating that Jon Huntsman received. That said, Huntsman’s rating excludes the 45 percent of those polled who had no opinion of him. “Of the better known candidates, Romney’s and Paul’s 3.5 scores are closest to the average American’s ideology,” Gallup points out.

By contrast, Bachmann is the GOP candidate that voters believe is ideologically farther away from them. And Obama is farther away than any of the Republican candidates, Bachmann included.
