Europe’s risk to the U.S., in one chart

So far, the U.S. economy has been largely insulated from the turmoil in Europe. In fact, the debt crisis has strengthened our position in certain ways, as anxious investors have fled to the relative safety of U.S. Treasurys and other assets. But as things abroad continue to deteriorate, that may not last. And the St. Louis Fed’s Financial Stress Index may capture part of that threat. As James Picerno points out, it’s a measure of risk that’s on the rise again, at least in part because of the Euromess:
