War dogs!

By Ezra Klein,

We sent 79 commandos to get Osama bin Laden — and one dog. A lot of people want to know about that dog, but unfortunately, the military isn’t telling, which is how you end up with the New York Times publishing this paragraph:

Suzanne Belger, president of the American Belgian Malinois Club, said she was hoping the dog was one of her breed “and that it did its job and came home safe.” But Laura Gilbert, corresponding secretary for the German Shepherd Dog Club of America, said she was sure the dog was her breed “because we’re the best!”

My heart goes out to the reporter who got stuck with that assignment. It also looks like Foreign Policy magazine took a stab at finding the identity of the bin Laden dog, but when they hit the military’s wall, they had the idea of a slideshow on military dogs. And it is awesome:

Yes, that is a dog on a “parachute deployment.” And no, they don’t always need help. “Dogs usually jump in tandem with their trainers, but when properly outfitted with flotation vests they can make short jumps into water on their own.” More awesome war dogs here.
