Why the U.S. job market is starting to look up, in one chart

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank’s employment index is the highest it’s been since April, fueling predictions that November jobs numbers could be better than expected, as Politico points out in this chart from the Philly Fed. This builds on other signs that the jobs outlook could be improving, albeit slowly. Unemployment benefit claims are the lowest they’ve been since April. And the Philly Fed’s latest survey of manufacturers also had signs of hope: “The broadest indicator of future activity showed marked improvement, and firms were notably more optimistic about future employment.”
