There’s a huge pay gap between men and women in the United States, one which shows few signs of closing anytime soon. But the size of that gap varies widely by profession. In 2012, the median weekly wage for women was about 80.9 percent of the median weekly wage for men. But as this chart from Planet Money’s Lam Thuy Vo shows, in some professions the situation is even worse.
Interestingly, many blue collar professions — such as cafeteria work, security guard work, and warehouse stock clerking —are the most egalitarian in their compensation, while female white collar professionals like doctors, stock brokers and insurance saleswomen face among the worst pay gaps around.
