Your stereotype of college students is bad and you should feel bad

One thing I tried to emphasize throughout my series on higher education costs is that the picture of college that the media tends to promote — of highly selective four-year schools with residential campuses — represents quite a small fraction of colleges and universities.

The Hamilton Project's new head honchos, Melissa Kearney and Ben Harris, just came out with a report that includes a fantastic infographic that makes this point extremely well, and also rebuts other misconceptions. Over a quarter of college students have children. 43.8 percent are older than 23. And especially for low-income students, private not-for-profit schools are a pretty small part of the picture.
