And Wonkblog, of course, has its graphs of the year. For 2013, we asked some of the year's most interesting, important and influential thinkers to name their favorite graph of the year — and why they chose it. Here's string theorist Brian Greene's.
The bump in the solid red line is the experimental evidence for the Higgs boson. The graph not only reveals an astounding feature of the universe (that we are all awash in molasses-like Higgs field that imbues particles with mass), but spectacularly confirms the ability of the human mind to reveal some of reality's most deeply hidden truths.
