Maxik: You don't need to consume more power to live a life you like

Fred Maxik

Founder and chief technology officer, Lighting Science Group, Satellite Beach, Fla.

You may want a more brilliant world; it doesn’t mean we need to consume more power to do it. If we do it smartly, we can actually consume a bit less and live a life that everyone likes regardless of what their taste is.

We want to put a microprocessor inside [your light bulb]. . . . It will be able to communicate with you in different ways — whether for dimming, color control [or] ambient sensing. That’s all becoming available, your ability to communicate that via cellphone, tablet or laptop over the next 24, 36 months.

Lighting is about to undergo that same transition. We may use lighting in entirely different ways. We may only use the portion of the light spectrum, the colors of the light spectrum that are necessary for the application we choose. It could be a light bulb that’s just so smart that it detects sunlight coming through the window [and] starts dimming until you get the light that you desire.
