Short takes on the week's announcements and deals.

Contracts

Fairfax-based live traffic video aggregator TrafficLand said it signed a deal with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to install its technology in the agency’s highway operations center.

Expansions

Reston-based education technology company ShareStream said it has opened a software engineering office at 11600 Sunrise Valley Dr., Reston, VA 20191.

Herndon-based software company ePlus said it has opened a services center in Raleigh, N.C.

Funding

District-based education software company Flat World Education said it raised $9.5 million in a new round of funding in January.

Reston-based mobile app company Canvas said it has raised $1.8 million of a $2 million equity offering.

Mergers

Bethesda-based financial services firms Shaefer Financial Group, Hutt Financial Group and Hannan Financial Group have merged to form Bethesda-based BluePoint.

Reston-based Infoition and Alexandria-based OhMyGov said they have merged to form Reston-based new media monitoring services company Synoptos.

Start-ups & new businesses

Carla Valdes, a former general partner at District-based venture fund Fortify.vc, has started a Sterling-based company called Handpressions. The company’s app lets parents turn photos of their children’s hands or feet into prints that can be manipulated into art.
