Big data symposium

The Northern Virginia Technology Council is having a Big Data Symposium Friday.

The theme of the symposium is “The Future of Our Region as a Global Center for Big Data.” Speakers include Anne Altman of IBM; Philip E. Bourne of the National Institutes of Health; Mike Bradshaw of Google; Aneesh Chopra of Hunch Analytics; Justin Langseth of Zoomdata; and Jennifer Morgan of SAP.

The half-day event begins at 7:30 a.m. at the NTSB Training Center, 45065 Riverside Pkwy., Ashburn. $65 for members, $95 for everyone else.

Other events of note

Monday: The Greater Washington Board of Trade plays host to Arianna Huffington, president and editor in chief of the Huffington Post, who will talk about her book, “Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom and Wonder.” The event begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Hamilton Live, 600 14th St. NW. $85 for members, $105 for everyone else.

Tuesday: The Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce is having its second Northern Virginia Business to Government Matchmaking Conference. Antonio Doss of the Small Business Administration will give the keynote. The event begins at 8 a.m. at the Westin Washington Dulles Airport, 2520 Wasser Terrace, Herndon. $75 for members, $100 for everyone else.

The Maryland Chamber of Commerce is having its Business Hall of Fame Awards Dinner. Inductees include Thomas J. Baltimore Jr. of RLJ Lodging Trust, Ellen H. Yankellow of CorrectRx Pharmacy Services and the late John T. Menzies III of the Terminal Corp. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at Camelot by Martin’s, 13905 Central Ave., Upper Marlboro. $200 for members, $275 for everyone else.

Economic calendar

New data on the international trade balance and retail sales are released Tuesday. Chain stores report their sales Thursday.
