Professional services: 7,000 jobs added
The professional services sector employs more than 700,000 workers in the Washington area, the most of any industry. However, job growth in this sector has been relatively tepid, and economists say it will need to accelerate for the region's recovery to gain traction. While job growth has been middling in this category, it did not appear to be markedly different in the first job reports since the sequester took effect, suggesting that the automatic federal spending cuts have not upended the labor market in this critical sector. Here, employees at contracting firm Lockheed Martin work in the company's NexGen Cyber Innovation and Technology Center, which monitors Internet threats.
