Top nonprofit: American Red Cross
American Red Cross ranked highest on this list because it spent over $3 billion on programs, more than any other charitable group. The Red Cross provides emergency assistance and disaster relief around the world. After Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, the Red Cross put together its largest disaster response in five years, launching relief operations in 12 states, the District and Puerto Rico. The organization sent more than 17,000 disaster workers who served 17.5 million meals and snacks, handed out 7 million cold-weather items, clean-up supplies and other relief items, and provided 74,000 shelter stays. Here, Red Cross's Joanna Evans gives a lesson on treating an external bleeding injury.
