What to Watch: Event to connect federal agencies with Latino vendors

WHAT TO WATCH

Key events this week

If the past is any indication, there could be lots of dealmaking Monday among federal agencies looking for vendors and Latino entrepreneurs certified to do business with the government.

The “procurement matchmaking” session is likely to be a highlight of the Latino Coalition’s small-business summit, which runs to Tuesday. More than $8 billion in contracts have been signed during the event’s nine-year history, organizers say. They expect to draw more than 700 Hispanic business people from around the country who are seeking contracts with such agencies as the Agriculture, Homeland Security and Transportation departments as well as major corporations including Hewlett-Packard, Verizon and Lockheed Martin. To participate in the matchmaking session, vendors must have a DUNS number — a nine-digit identifier for businesses in a database maintained by Dun & Bradstreet — and a central contract registration prequalifying them to do business with the government.

The conference also will focus on legislative issues, including health care reform and immigration policy. Speakers include Grady Burnett, vice president of global marketing at Facebook; House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.); and Carly Fiorina, former chief executive of HP.

It is scheduled to start Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert St. NW in the District.

Promoting Loudoun

Well, it’s not exactly the Cannes International Film Festival, but the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development on Thursday is hosting the local business glitterati in a screening of its new promotional videos starring several local entrepreneurs.

The videos, produced by an Emmy Award winning company called Electro-Fish Media, show business leaders — including Juan A. Navarro, president of NIITEK; Peter Weber, chief executive of Carpathia Hosting; and Doug Fabbioli, co-founder of Fabbioli Cellars — extolling the benefits of living and doing business in Loudoun County. The videos, which will be posted on YouTube and e-mailed as a link in its promotional materials, are aimed at persuading out-of-town companies to locate there.

The screening is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. at George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus, 20101 Academic Way in Ashburn.
