An LTE iPad? AT&T, Verizon promise something new

March 7, 2012

As we noted in our final rumor roundup this morning, as far as the rumor mill stands this morning, an LTE iPad sounds like a good bet.

And carriers are angling to get in on the hype, with Verizon and AT&T both teasing that something big is coming to their networks Wednesday.

The nation’s two largest carriers both have mentions of a new product coming soon, though they don’t mention any specifics. A 4G iPad would be a great boon to the product lineups of both carriers, who have been aggressively building out their LTE networks.

Reports that a 4G iPad is on its way are both surprising and expected. Apple has yet to launch a 4G device, which has made it the target of criticism as other device makers focus heavily on making devices that run on the faster networks.

But battery life issues tend to plague those super-fast devices, and while the networks are growing, they’re still a far cry from nationwide coverage. Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu has said that checks with his sources in the supply chain have indicated that Apple has worked out the battery issues, and he expects to see LTE connectivity in Apple’s next-generation tablet.
