Apple announcement rumors: New dock connector named ‘Lightning’

September 12, 2012

Here’s a look at more rumors ahead of today’s iPhone announcement.

Apple is expected to release a slimmer dock connector, in the first change of its kind to the device.

The smaller, 9-pin connector will be called ‘Lightning’ says 9 to5 mac, citing sources. The blog speculates that Lightning gets its name because it will sync faster with computers than the 30-pin connector currently in use. It will also come in two versions— one that clips onto the iPhone 5 and iPods and another with an attached cable for accessory cases.

For those wondering how the new dock connector will fit their current iOS devices, Apple will reportedly provide an adapter.

Earlier rumors put the connector’s size as big as 19 pins and as small as 8 pins. Either way, Lightning will be smaller (but it’s too soon to say better) than the status quo.
