Auto theft: Which vehicles are most likely to be stolen?

According to a study by the Highway Loss Data Institute, an insurance group, these trucks, SUVs and cars are most frequently targeted by thieves.

No. 10: Chrysler 300 HEMI

The Chrysler 300 HEMI, a sedan the Highway Loss Data Institute says is noted for its powerful engine, ranks 10th on the list. There are 6.3 claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years on this type of car. No. 9: GMC Yukon

With 6.4 claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years, the GMC Yukon ranks ninth on the list.

No. 8: Chevrolet Avalanche

Pickup trucks like the Chevrolet Avalanche are the type of vehicle most often targeted by thieves.With 6.4 claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years, the Avalanche comes in eighth on the list.

No. 7: Ford F-350

The Highway Data Loss Institute ranks the Ford F-350 seventh on the list with seven claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years. The study says that although pickup theft remains high, it has declined significantly since its last survey.

No. 6: Chrysler 300

With 7.1 claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years, the Chrysler 300 is the highest ranking sedan on the list at the No. 6 spot.

No. 5: GMC Sierra

The Highway Loss Data Institute says that the recent decline in pickup theft may be a result of the proliferation of ignition immobilizers. In the HLDI's study, the GMC Sierra had more than 7.3 claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years.

The Ford F-250 is the second-most targeted vehicle. The HLDI reports that there are 9.7 claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years on this model.

No. 1: Cadillac Escalade

The Cadillac Escalade tops the list. The HLDI reports that the model "is more than 6 times as likely as the average vehicle to be targeted by thieves and has overall theft losses more than 10 times as big." The Escalade EXT, the version of the vehicle pictured here, is the worst, with more than 14 claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years.
