At the Hyattsville J.C. Penney, Velita Smith, left, bought a suitcase and a host of kitchen items for her mother, who is remodeling her kitchen, and inspects an already-opened toaster oven. These items were on sale for $8 each — a savings of up to nearly 70 percent for most. A woman eyes what awaits her in a Flint, Mich., Target store just minutes before the start of its Black Friday sales event. Black Friday, the day when retailers traditionally turn a profit for the year, got a jump start this year as many stores opened just as families were finishing up Thanksgiving dinner. Stores are experimenting with ways to compete with online rivals like Amazon.com that can offer holiday shopping deals at any time and on any day.
