Tech IPOs: From the blockbuster to the highly anticipated ventures

Internet companies such as Groupon and Zynga have had successful initial public offerings while others like Facebook and Living Social are lining up to go public.

Online radio streaming service Pandora saw its shares jump 9 percent during their first day of trading in June 2011 on the New York Stock Exchange, becoming the latest online stock to enjoy a strong public offering and fueling fears of another dot-com bubble.

LinkedIn shares more than doubled in May 2011 during its initial public offering, which valued the professional networking site at nearly $9 billion after its first day of trading.

In November 2011, online daily deals site Groupon had the biggest IPO by a Web company since Google, according to Reuters. The company raised $700 million in its IPO, whereas Google raised $1.7 billion.

LivingSocial, the second most popular online deals site after Groupon, is also seeking to go public, and, while the initial paperwork hasn’t been filed yet, analysts estimate that it is exploring an IPO that could be about $1 billion, giving it a valuation of $10 billion to $15 billion.

Facebook is speculated to have its IPO in the second quarter of 2012 with an estimated valuation of $100 billion — and that’s the lowball number. As reporter Larry Dignan wrote on CBSNews.com, "In the end, this IPO parade is basically a pregame show for Facebook, which will represent the Super Bowl of market debuts."

Twitter's IPO may be a longer way off — analysts estimate 2013 — but it has been raising funds in anticipation of its eventual stock market debut. The Financial Times reported Digital Sky Technologies, the Russian venture capital firm that has also invested in Facebook, took a 5 percent stake in the company in August for $400 million.

Rovio Mobile, the creator of the wildly popular Angry Birds game, is also thinking about an IPO in two to three years, according to CEO Mikael Hed. In March, the company raised $42 million from venture capitalists. Company executives say they hope to use the funding to expand into other types of entertainment.
