Showcasing new designs and innovative technology, automakers test the waters with concept vehicles that they hope will rev up auto fans’ interests. Check out some of the concepts that could set the tone for the auto industry for years to come.

Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis

Could the next-generation Genesis be another hit for Hyundai? Depends on what you think about the automaker's HCD-14 Genesis concept. Two features that set this luxury sedan apart from its predecessor are eye-tracking and hand-gesture technology that help control navigation and audio systems.The concept car also sports a V8 engine.

Smart Forstars

With the Forstars, Smart pushes the envelope with in-car entertainment. The all-electric concept car features a video projector built into hood so that movie lovers can watch their favorite flicks from their connected iPhone if they find a blank wall. The car has a lithium-ion battery and a 60 kilowatt electric motor.

Ford Atlas

Pickup buyers got a peek into the future of Ford's best-selling F-150 with the Atlas concept. The big takeaway with the concept Ford's new wheel technology, which the automaker promises will be able to save drivers more money at the pump. The concept's wheels sport automatic shutters that can "reduce wind resistance," Ford says.

Ford, trying to fend off new pickups from competitors targeting its top-selling F-Series, showed an F-150 prototype with an interior that foreshadows its future for the segment.

Toyota's Corolla Furia

With the Corolla Furia concept, Toyota is touting a radical style which could spill over to the company's compact sedan in the future. The Furia gives Toyota's popular Corolla a sportier look. That could attract younger audiences, Toyota says.

Acura's NSX

If you thought Acuras couldn't get any sleeker, then think again. The NSX concept has clean lines and an edgier look. But what made headlines with this concept is that Acura finally gave showgoers a look at the car's interior, which might make it to production. The interior design is based on a "Human Support Cockpit theme," Acura says. The concept sports car also features a V-6 engine.

BMW i8

The concept sports car, which has a plug-in hybrid engine, can travel up to 20 miles just on electric power, BMW says. But speed demons need not worry: the car also has the horses to drive it from zero to 60 in less than five seconds.
