Growth of Federal Reserve’s balance sheet

The Federal Reserve has been buying Treasury bonds since November, an action known as quantitative easing that was meant to strengthen the economy. It was the latest in a series of steps since 2008 that have resulted in the central bank vastly increasing the volume of assets on its balance sheet. The $600 billion in purchases under “QE2” were scheduled to conclude Thursday.
