Police have prevented hundreds of anti-austerity protesters from entering the central plaza, where they have held numerous demonstrations since May, railing against the political status quo. Two years of recession following a property boom that went bust have left Spain with 21 percent unemployment — the highest in the 17-nation euro zone. Joblessness for those age 16 to 29 stands at about 35 percent.
