Markets end with little change since the beginning of 2011, and investors move to U.S. Treasury bonds and the dollar

While the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index varied wildly at times, sinking into serious doldrums in August and September, it ended the year at 1257.60, down only 0.04 from the Dec. 31, 2010, close of 1257.64.
