Rupert Murdoch called ‘unfit’ to lead in U.K. Parliament’s report on phone-hacking scandal

British lawmakers released a report Monday about whether witnesses had misled them during their probe into the phone-hacking scandal at News International. Here are some excerpts from the report that detail the wrongdoing that key News Corp. executives or former executives are being accused of.

In the report, News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rupert Murdoch was found to be an unfit "person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company."

In the report, British lawmakers said they were astonished that the News Corp. Deputy Chief Operating Officer James Murdoch "did not seek more information or ask to see the evidence and counsel’s opinion when he was briefed by Tom Crone and Colin Myler on the Gordon Taylor case."

Rebekah Brooks

Rebekah Brooks was News International's CEO from September 2009 to July 2011. Prior to that she was the editor of News of the World at the time of a 2002 phone hacking incident. In a report released May 1, 2012, U.K. lawmakers said the "Editor should accept responsibility" for such actions and for the "culture which permitted them."

Les Hinton

Les Hinton resigned as chief executive officer of Dow Jones & Co. as a result of the phone-hacking and bribery scandal. Parliament's report said Hinton "misled the Committee in 2009 in not telling the truth about payments to Clive Goodman and his role in authorizing them, including the payment of his legal fee."

Tom Crone

The Parliament committee report said that former News Corp. lawyer Tom Crone and another former employee "misled the Committee by answering questions falsely about their knowledge of evidence that other News of the World employees had been involved in phone-hacking and other wrongdoing."

Colin Myler

Colin Myler is editor of the New York Daily News but previously served as editor of the News of the World. Along with Crone, Myler is accused of having given "repeated assurances that there was no evidence that any further News of the World employee, beyond Clive Goodman, had been involved in phone-hacking. ... Both Tom Crone and Colin Myler deliberately avoided disclosing crucial information to the Committee and, when asked to do, answered questions falsely."
