The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. insures about 26,500 defined-benefit pension plans in the United States. It is not funded by general tax revenue and is trustee for plans affecting about 1.5 million workers and retirees. If American Airlines is successful in terminating the company’s pension plan, it would add about 130,000 workers to that total. Read related article.
