Public sees role for government in reducing wealth inequality

A clear majority of Americans say the federal government should play a role in reducing the wealth gap. Increasing the minimum wage is a popular way to achieve this goal. Two-thirds support doing so and three-quarters say the wage should be higher than the current $7.25 an hour. Democrats and Republicans hold different views on these questions. Read related story.

SOURCE: This Washington Post-ABC News poll was conducted by telephone Dec. 12 to 15, among a random sample of 1,005 adults. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish on land lines and cellphones. The results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
