When hackers attack

These six companies have fallen victim to major cyber attacks in recent months.

Sony

Sony and its affiliated sites have been hit with more than a dozen cyberattacks since a major breach of its PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, causing a three-week outage. The attacks have breached customer names, passwords, e-mail addresses, and some financial information. The company's security policies have been questioned by several lawmakers, according to Post tech blogger Hayley Tsukayama.

Google

In June, Google announced in that several U.S. government officials using its Gmail e-mail service were the target of a phishing scam, The Post's Cecilia Kang and Ellen Nakashima reported. Google said the hackers were based in China, something the Chinese government angrily denied. U.S. officials said no official government systems had been breached.

RSA Security

RSA Security admitted in June that its security systems had been breached, according to Post reporter Ellen Nakashima. As a result of the compromise, the company offered to reissue its security tokens, which had become the gold standard in the security industry. The attack on Lockheed Martin is believed to have been the result of information taken from RSA Security.

Epsilon

Best Buy, Target and USBank were among the companies affected by a server breach at Epsilon, a marketing company. The firm revealed that several million customer names and e-mail addresses were compromised in a hacking attack in late March, according to Tsukayama. Despite affecting several financial institutions, no banking information was leaked as a result of the attack.

Lockheed Martin

Defense contractor Lockheed Martin said fended off a cyberattack on its systems in May. The effect of the breach was "minimal," according to a Defense Department official interviewed by Nakashima.
