Yahoo trends: iPhone beats Casey Anthony, Kim Kardashian
By Hayley Tsukayama,
Pop idols and celebrities peppered Yahoo’s list of its top 10 search terms of the year, but the leading spot went to the iPhone
.Apple’s iPhone led the list, probably thanks to the cottage industry of Apple rumors that constantly — and often incorrectly — leaked information about the company’s next handset. The iPhone 4S, released just a day before the death of Apple co-founder and chairman Steve Jobs, became Apple’s fastest-selling device.
Yahoo also noted that, for the first time in nine years, pop idol Britney Spears did not make the top 10 list. That’s not necessarily bad news for Spears, though, who’s made the list in the past for some infamous behavior.
Breaking news stories also showed up high on the company’s list, with Casey Anthony coming in at No. 2, the Japanese earthquake and tsunami at No. 9 and the killing of Osama bin Laden at No. 10.
The rest of the list was filled by celebrities: Kim Kardashian was third, followed by Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez and Lindsay Lohan. Jennifer Aniston was a surprise at eighth place, likely bolstered by her turn in “Horrible Bosses” and by drama surrounding her love life, Yahoo said. Lopez, who hasn’t been on the list for years, probably resurfaced due to her judging stint on “American Idol,” which itself was the seventh most popular search term this year.
