Amazon smartphone may be comin’ down the chimney tonight

Rumors have been flying all summer that Amazon is working on a smartphone and the buzz is louder than ever that the elusive device will be presented Thursday at the press event in LA.

Sources say that the phone will operate on an Android-based system, similar to the Kindle Fire.

The tech community is bubbling with excitement at the possibility of an Amazon smartphone, like kids waiting for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. After news surrounding the updated Kindle Fire and e-reader was leaked last week, anticipation runs the highest at the possibility that Amazon will puts its own smartphone underneath the tree.

A Bloomberg report last month indicated that Amazon was working with Foxconn, the manufacturers of the iPhone and iPad. The company has also been buying wireless patents, perhaps in order to offer its own prepaid cell service, and analysts suggest an Amazon phone would come equipped with features that promote Amazon content and services.
