Nexus 10
The Nexus 10 tablet runs the Android 4.2 operating system which brings plenty of new features, including a "photo sphere" that lets users take 360-degree images. The Nexus 10, which starts at $399, has a high-definition screen with a better resolution than the latest version of the iPad and is designed to make it easier to switch between user profiles on the same device.

Nook HD
Barnes & Noble has two new Nook tablets. Its new Nook HD comes in two sizes, one with a screen 7-inches wide diagonally, the same size as past Nooks, starting at $199, and one with a new 9-inch diagonal screen, called the Nook HD+, starting at $269. In addition to the new high-definition screen and a lighter body, Barnes & Noble is also increasing the services the Nook offers. It is adding a video purchase and rental service, allowing user profiles and making it easier to browse titles in its book and magazine stores.

Jeff Bezos, chief executive and founder of Amazon.com, unveiled the company's new Kindle Fire models at a news event in California on Sept. 6. The models include a new version of the Kindle Fire and three versions of an enhanced tablet called the Kindle Fire HD. The new Kindle Fire, which has twice the RAM of its predecessor and a better battery life, costs $159 — a $40 price drop.

Amazon's Kindle Fire HD tablet line was the talk of the event. The seven-inch high-definition-screen model starts at $199 and has 16 GB or 32 GB of storage and 3G connectivity as well as the dual-WiFi antennas and speakers. An 8.9-inch version, which starts at $299, has many of the same specifications but comes with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of memory. Amazon also announced a 4G LTE-enabled, 8.9-inch, tablet that starts at $499.

The iPad
Following the success of three previous models, Apple's iPad with retina display has a faster processor and improved WiFi connectivity. It is 0.37 inches thick, 9.5 inches long and weighs 1.44 pounds. It starts at $499. Apple also introduced a smaller tablet, the iPad mini, which has a smaller and lower-resolution screen, that starts at $329.
