Barnes & Noble’s Nook sales up 85 percent

Barnes & Noble's been talking up its tablet success without providing sales figures, but now there's at least one number behind the claims: the company says its overall Nook sales are up 85 percent to $220 million in its last fiscal quarter. The figure represents all of B&N's Nook business, including hardware, accessory, and digital content sales, so there's no clear indication of how many tablets have actually been sold — it's also important to note that since B&N's fiscal quarter ended on October 29th, the sales don't include the Nook Tablet which launched on November 7th. The bookseller's total sales declined slightly, with a net loss of $6.6 million, but its digital offerings are clearly on the rise. Unfortunately, we'll probably have to wait until B&N's next fiscal quarter to find out just how well the Nook Tablet's been doing, but for now we still have more information than Amazon's ever been willing to provide.
