A new Obama administration privacy policy explains how the government will gather the user data of online visitors to, mobile apps and social media sites, and it clarifies that online comments, whether tirades or tributes, are in the open domain.

Google will be posting updates on the service problems to its Google Apps Status Dashboard, generally the best place to check for status updates.

In a statement, company spokeswoman Andrea Freund said that it was “currently experiencing an issue with some Google services. For everyone who is affected, we apologize for any inconvenience you may be experiencing.”

The dashboard also indicates there was a problem with Google’s Drive cloud storage service, which the company says should now be resolved.

The last Gmail service disruption, according to Google’s status dashboard, was last Thursday. The company reported that it resolved those issues in about two hours.

As is common during Gmail outages, the service’s users took to Twitter to complain about the service disruption, followed by a wave of people complaining about the complaints.

Lifehacker took the opportunity to point people to ways they can access Gmail when it’s down, including accessing it on mobile devices, in plain html or through IMAP and POP3 protocols.
