Instagram rolls out new Web profile pages

Instagram is expanding to the Web with profile pages, a feature that’s been long-requested by the social network’s users.

“You’ve asked for Instagram on the web and we’ve listened,” Instagram announced in a company blog post. “Over the next few days, we’ll be rolling out Instagram profiles on the web!”

It should, however, come as no surprise that the pages look an awful lot like the profile pages on Facebook, which bought Instagram in a mega-deal announced in April.

In fact, the profiles will look quite a bit like the Facebook “Timeline” layout, with a large display at the top of the page that appear to showcase seven of a users’ favorite picture — one that is larger than the others.

All of a users’s Instagram pictures will show up on the profile, though pictures set to be private will only be visible to logged-in members of a users’ network.

Right now, the company said, users won’t be able to upload photos from the Web, only via mobile devices. Users will, however, be able to manage their profiles from the Web to use as a landing page for all of their quick snaps.

The new pages will roll out to all Instagram users in the next week or so, the company said. Users can access their individual profiles by heading to instagram.com/[username] .

Despite the similarities, the Instagram profiles don’t link to Facebook profiles and do not integrate the two social networks in any way. Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg made it clear when the two companies announced the acquisition deal that the networks would remain separate.
