Meet some of Silicon Valley’s female executives

On July 16, Yahoo named Marissa Mayer as its new chief executive. Prior to that, Mayer was a vice president at Google. Here’s a look at some of the other female executives at major technology companies.

Marissa Mayer

On July 16, 2012, Yahoo named Marissa Mayer as its new chief executive. Before getting tapped for this position, Mayer was Google's vice president of location services. She was one of Google's earliest employees and the company's first female engineer. Mayer worked at Google for about 13 years.

Meg Whitman

Meg Whitman, chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard, listens during an interview in Las Vegas on June 5, 2012. Whitman said after the "turmoil" from last year's management upheaval, the company is working to differentiate itself with partnerships, a broad product base and an emphasis on engineering. Whitman took the helm of the tech giant in September of 2011. Before that, she was the chief executive of eBay, where she was considered one of the most powerful women in the business world. She served as the company's CEO for about 10 years until 2008. Two years later, Whitman tried her hand at running for California governor. She lost that race to former Gov. Jerry Brown.

Ursula Burns

Burns started out at Xerox as a mechanical engineering intern in the 1980s. She helped restructure Xerox "as a leader in color technology and document services," the company's Web site says. In 2009, Burns became the tech company's CEO. Under her, the company had its biggest acquistion ever when it bought Affiliated Computer Services.

Sheryl Sandberg

Sheryl Sandberg is Facebook's chief operating officer. Similarly to Mayer, Sandberg worked at Google. There she served as vice president of global online sales. Prior to that, Sandberg worked at the U.S. Treasury Department, where she was a chief of staff, and she worked at the World Bank. In June 2012, Facebook named Sandberg to its board of directors, becoming the group's first female member.

Diane Bryant

Diane Bryant is Intel's vice president and general manager of the Datacenter and Connected Systems Group. One of her roles in this position is overseeing the product development for the company's "cloud server infrastructure," Intel says.

Shona Brown

Shona Brown is the senior vice president of Google.org, which is the tech giant's charitable group. Prior to holding this position Brown helped build the business operations at Google.

Virginia "Ginni" Rometty

Ginni Rometty was tapped to be IBM's president and CEO in October of 2011, becoming the first female chief executive in the company's 100-year history. Before serving as the head of "Big Blue," Rometty was the company's senior vice president and group executive for sales.

Susan Wojcicki, is the senior vice president of advertising at Google. Wojcicki made in onto Forbes's 2011 "Most Powerful Women" along with Sandberg, Burns, Mayer and Rometty. Wojcicki's sister Anne is married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
