Microsoft announces Windows 8 sales

Microsoft said Tuesday that users are warming to Windows 8 quickly and that the company has sold 40 million licenses for its new system.

Microsoft communications manager Brandon LeBlanc wrote in a company blog post that Windows 8 is “outpacing” Windows 7 in upgrades after a month on the market. The Guardian noted that Microsoft reported that 60 million Windows 7 licenses had been sold in the first two months the system was on the market.

As more firms add social data to their maps, the community-based navigation app is looking attractive.

Tuesday’s post also provided some updated statistics on the company’s new app store.

According to the post, the number of apps on the store has “doubled” in the past month. The post didn’t provide any numbers, but Microsoft said that when it introduced that it would have 100,000 apps within three months of the new system’s launch. It still has a long way to go to compete with app marketplaces from Apple and Google, which both have at least 700,000 apps for sale.

LeBlanc also slipped in another interesting detail: Microsoft developers keep 80 percent of the revenue they make in the store — more than Apple developers make from the Cupertino, Calif., company’s 70-30 split.

Microsoft is the subject of a lot of interest, particularly headed into the holiday season, as the company tries to gain marketshare in the smartphone and tablet worlds.

A recent report from Digitimes, which has a spotty rumor record, has revived speculation that Microsoft will be launching its own smartphone. According to the Monday report, Foxconn has reportedly landed deals to make smartphones for Microsoft and Amazon.

There has been speculation that both companies would begin manufacturing their own smartphones — right now, Microsoft partners with other smartphone makers on its Windows Phone 8 system, while Amazon has no presence in smartphones. The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Microsoft was testing a smartphone with its Asian suppliers.

Microsoft has been tied closely to its partner model for smartphones but has shown with its Surface tablet that it’s willing to try its hand at hardware as well.

The company has indicated that it’s likely to release more hardware in the future, but hasn’t said specifically that it’s interested in a smartphone.
