Microsoft Thursday released a bit more information about the price of its upcoming Surface tablet that runs a full version of Windows 8 Pro.
The company posted on its Web site that the tablet will start at $899 and will be coming in January 2013. The starting model will have 64 GB of storage, while a $999 model will have 128 GB of storage.
Microsoft brought the technology it introduced at its TechFair in Seattle this spring to Washington, demo-ing it for lawmakers and other visitors. But the XBox one was nowhere in sight.

That puts the device more in the price range of ultra-portable laptops than with other tablets — making it clear that Microsoft is taking aim at consumers who want to replace their computers with something a little lighter. The Windows 8 Pro version of the device will run all current Windows 7 applications, meaning that the tablet can also function as an ultra-light personal computer.
In addition to having the full Windows 8 Pro operating system, the next model of the Surface will have other key differences from the RT version already on store shelves.
According to Panos Panay, General Manager of Microsoft Surface, the new model will have an Intel Core i5 processor for better graphics and support Pen input.
The Pro version of the Surface will also include a full-sized USB 3.0 port and have a Mini DisplayPort. The Surface RT has a USB 2.0 port and an HD video out port. Both have a slot for a microSD card.
The device will weigh less than two pounds and is around a half of an inch thick.
Microsoft said earlier this week that it has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses in the operating system’s first month on sale. That, the company said, outpaces the rate of upgrades it saw when users went from Windows Vista to Windows 7.
