Pinterest announced Thursday that it’s providing a new feature that will let users create “secret boards” that users can make private or share by invitation.
“The holidays are a time for being with family, sharing great meals, and, of course, surprising your favorite people with a special gift,” wrote Pinterest software engineer Evrhet Milam in a company blog post. “That’s why we thought the holidays were a perfect time to test one of our most frequently-requested features: secret boards!”

The company is rolling the feature out to all users starting Thursday.
According to the company, users will be able to create up to three secret boards, and will have the option to make them public at any time. But they will not be able to make any of their current boards private, because other members on the network may have already repinned information from those displays.
Users will also be able to create secret boards from their mobile devices, if they download the latest app for the iPhone, iPad Android phone or Android tablet.
Milam said that the company has also updated its privacy policy to include information on secret boards and will be sending notifications to its users to let them know about the changes.
Pinterest’s simple pinboard design has resonated with social media users since the site took off earlier this year. But it’s faced competition from bigger social networks, such as Facebook, which have adapted that simple, grid-like layout into their own products to let users display things or products that they like.
Facebook recently began testing different versions of its “Like” button — including buttons labeled “Want” and “Collect” — that connect users directly to retailers. Items added via these buttons show up on a grid of pictures on users’ profiles.
