IBM announced in October 2011 that it has named Virginia Rometty to become the CEO of the company, putting a female in the top spot at IBM for the first time in the company's 100-year-history. She succeeds Samuel Palmisano, who is retiring after reaching traditional retirement age of 60, effective Jan. 1, 2012.
