Each year, J.D. Power and Associates evaluate the opinions of owners after their first 90 days with a new car, looking for overall satisfaction with performance, comfort, design, and more, in the form of the APEAL study. For 2012, Porsche, MINI, and Audi each take two segment wins, though Chevrolet scores the most wins, with three.
Premium cars are broken out from their respective categories for the APEAL study. This year, no premium/luxury manufacturer scored more than two category wins.
Porsche leads the way in the Premium Sport segment with the 2012 911, and in the Midsize Premium Crossover SUV segment with the 2012 Cayenne.
MINI's 2012 Countryman nabbed the Compact Crossover SUV win, while the 2012 MINI Coupe/Roadster get the nod for top Compact Sporty Car. While MINI is generally perceived as a premium brand amongst its competition, it isn't classified as such by J.D. Power. The APEAL study results might be somewhat surprising given their relatively low Initial Quality Study scores, but the results likely reflect a difference in what is being measured, and how it's measured, as anything else.
Audi was the other two-category premium winner, with the 2012 A8 and 2012 A6 taking the Large Premium Car and Midsize Premium Car categories, respectively.
Other luxury car category winners include the 2012 Mercedes SLK Class, the 2012 BMW 3-Series, the 2012 Infiniti QX56, and the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.
Perhaps by sheer volume--or as a sign of real, measurable improvement in the new GM--Chevrolet scored the most category wins of any carmaker, with the 2012 Sonic, 2012 Avalanche, and 2012 Volt all taking their categories. Ford, Nissan, and Dodge all managed two category wins apiece as well.
