2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata To Debut On September 3, 2014: Video

Mazda has confirmed that its next-generation MX-5 Miata will be revealed to the world on September 3, 2014. The covers will come off simultaneously at three different events, one each in Europe, Japan and the U.S.

At the Japanese unveiling, to be held in Maihama Amphitheater in Urayasu city, Chiba, Mazda will also host an MX-5 thanks day, with fans from all over the globe invited to join in the celebrations. Applications for the event open tomorrow via Mazda’s MX-5 25th anniversary website. The American unveiling will take place at an event in Monterey, California.

No additional details about the fourth-generation MX-5 have been revealed, but back at the 2014 New York Auto Show in April we got a look at the car’s new SkyActiv chassis and learned that it will weigh around 220 pounds less than the outgoing model, meaning a curb weight close to 2,200 pounds.

The new MX-5 is also expected to offer 1.5- and 2.0-liter engines, both using Mazda's highly efficient SkyActiv technology. Judging by the teaser video above, it sounds like turbocharging is among the technologies.

As mentioned, this is the fourth generation of the car since the original ‘NA’ model was launched back in 1989. A formal debut of the new model is expected at the 2014 Paris Auto Show in November, with sales in the U.S. likely to commence in the first half of next year.
