General Motors Issues Six New Recalls Affecting 823,000 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC Vehicles

July 24

For much of the spring, it seemed as if General Motors issued a new round of recalls every other day, but the automaker has been largely quiet on that front for over three weeks. Could the recall party be coming to an end?

Based on a new press release from GM, the answer is probably "no".

The release outlines six new recalls, some big, some small. They cover a range of recent models from GM's surviving four nameplates and affect roughly 823,000 vehicles. This brings the total number of vehicles recalled by GM since January 1, 2014 to 28,767,143.

Here's a quick rundown of the six new recalls:

RECALL #1: 2010-2012 Cadillac SRX; 2010-2012 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain; 2011-2012 Buick Regal and LaCrosse; 2011-2012 Chevrolet Camaro

UNITS AFFECTED: 475,161

This recall affects only those vehicles equipped with power height adjustment systems for the driver's and front passenger's seats. According to GM, a bolt in those systems can become loose and fall out, causing the seat to move freely up and down. Though GM has received reports linking one crash and three injuries to this problem, the automaker says that the vehicles are still safe to drive. However, customers are cautioned not to use the power height adjustment system until a dealer has inspected and replaced the bolt.

RECALL #2:  2013-2014 Buick Encore; 2013-2014 Cadillac ATS; 2014 Cadillac CTS and ELR; 2014 Chevrolet Caprice and SS; 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado LD and HD; 2014-2015 GMC Sierra LD and HD

UNITS AFFECTED: 151,923

Due to a loss of power on a laser welding machine, some vehicles manufactured between July 2013 and January 2014 may suffer from an incomplete weld on the seat hook bracket. GM says that less than one percent of all models built during that period require service, but the company will ask owners to take their vehicles to a dealer for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the lower seat track.

RECALL #3: 2011-2013 Buick Regal; 2013 Chevrolet Malibu

UNITS AFFECTED: 127,235

This recall affects Regals and Malibus equipped with two bulbs in each front turn signal. Due to a software glitch, drivers are now only notified (by a rapidly flashing turn signal light) if both bulbs in a signal burn out. GM plans to update the associated control module to alert drivers when just one bulb on either side has burned out.

RECALL #4: 2014 Chevrolet Impala

UNITS AFFECTED:  65,276

A dodgy electrical ground on the power steering control module may cause the Impala's power steering to go out. (GM thinks that paint may have seeped behind a nut associated with the grounding connection.) If the power steering goes out, a warning light will illuminate on the Impala's dash, a chime will sound, and the vehicle will become more difficult to steer, especially at low speeds. GM says that dealers will examine the ground nut, clean off any paint, and update the power steering control module software. The automaker reports that one accident has been linked to the problem, but no injuries or fatalities.

RECALL #5: 2014-2015 Chevrolet Spark

UNITS AFFECTED: 3,065

In some South Korean-built vehicles, one (or possibly both) of the Spark's lower control arms wasn't properly fastened to the steering knuckle. As a result, drivers may hear noise coming from the front of the vehicle, and over time, the control arm may separate from the knuckle, causing a loss of steering control. Dealers will inspect the bolts on both the left- and right- hand lower control arms to make sure that they're properly tightened. GM says that no crashes or injuries have been linked to the problem.

RECALL #6: 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon Denali

UNITS AFFECTED: 25

In a small number of SUVs, the roof carriers may have been secured with the wrong retaining nuts, which could result in holes or rips in the roof rail air bags. Roughly one-third of these vehicles are still in showrooms, but the others will need to be brought in for inspections and repairs.
