The Post's Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Awards were established in 1983 to honor teachers who have shown initiative, creativity and an exceptional degree of professionalism in teaching. Agnes Meyer, the wife of Eugene Meyer, publisher of The Washington Post from 1933 to 1946, was strong supporter of public education. The awards were established in her name to recognize dedicated teachers who have shown initiative, creativity and an exceptional degree of professionalism in teaching. The Washington Post Company Educational Foundation was later founded to continue this program and contribute in a substantive way to the improvement of education in the Washington metropolitan area.
